Hello Friend,
How many times this week have you taken the online route for an in-person chore? I can name a few without even thinking hard: grocery delivery, home depot order, texting instead of calling…the list goes on.
Today I had to go to the post office. *sigh* After failing at submitting an address forwarding form online FIVE TIMES (I would do almost anything to avoid the post office) and then also failing at it in person a month ago, I decided today was the day to drag myself there.
I had the letter of failure from them in my pocket–suspiciously delivered to the new address. So, I was in a MOOD while I waited in the special secondary line for Problematic People ironically located next to a Letters for Santa mailbox. It’s hard to be a bitch when Santa is watching.
Three times someone’s phone rang out in the cock-a-doodle-do ringtone. Like, the full volume of someone who is very proud of their unique phone chime. I’ll save my monologue on digital etiquette for later because it wasn’t a ringtone.
IT WAS A LIVE ROOSTER. Today I learned that you can ship live roosters via USPS and they just sort of hang out under the workers’ desks until they are taken away. I’ve never heard a more strident rooster with more to say than this guy. My entire visit was set to the backdrop of Old Mc Donald and I absolutely loved it. Whatever that rooster’s fate is, he made my dumb errand a complete joy.
I’m a modern person just like you and love to save time and be efficient but there’s a rich layering of experience that happens in person. So I’m apt to wonder: what are we missing by always taking the digital route? It’s not lost on me that I’ve been advocating for in-person coworking for 15 years but I sort of forgot the benefits of “in real life” for every day living. What do you think? Am I on to something?
Love, Angel
