Flipping out at Cohere Community —The Rise of Hairpin Homes

Cohere’s founder, Angel Kwiatkowski, is not only the driving force behind Cohere, but the community at Cohere also helps lift her up in return, freeing her up to follow additional pursuits outside of the coworking community. Her most recent project, Hairpin Homes, is an adventure with longtime friend and fellow former Nebraskan Michelle Rembolt—flipping houses!

What’s it all about?

Michelle and Angel have known each other for many years—since they met at CSU in 1997. Many moves, career changes, and children later, and the pair live on the same cul-de-sac. They had discussed flipping houses for several years, so when the opportunity to do so materialized, these close friends jumped at the chance.

When most people think of flipping houses, they tend to imagine one of two things: either predatory real estate agents looking for a fast buck at the expense of both the buyer and seller, or one of about a million different shows on HGTV that involve cameras, lights, and sledgehammers.

This is not what you will find at Hairpin Homes.

The point of Hairpin Homes is more substantial than that, however. Michelle has a passion for both beauty and quality, while Angel’s greatest joy at Hairpin Homes is meeting the neighbors of the flipped houses and hearing the relief in their voices as the neglected home in their midst is reborn into something beautiful.

For Angel and Michelle, the real reward in taking old, worn-down homes and turning them into safe, comfortable domiciles lies in the opportunity to improve their community and to lift up the people around them. These two spectacular sellers will never put a house on the market until it’s safe enough for their own family to live in.

They specialize in mid-century homes—houses built between 1949 and 1979—and are eager to ensure that both the buyer and the seller have a fair and hassle-free experience. Hairpin Homes helps people find their way out of situations such as bankruptcy, divorce, or other emergencies by buying houses that might otherwise sit unoccupied, becoming more and more decrepit.

Next Steps

While there are many individuals willing to help someone buy or sell a home, there are fewer willing to take on the job of cleaning, remodeling, and otherwise preparing the home for a new family to move into. Exactly the type of home that Hairpin Homes looks for each other.

These entrepreneurs not only buy those homes at reasonable prices, but they also update and transform the buildings into homes that, with proper care, will last their new owners for many more decades. Once Michelle and Angel have renovated one of their wonderful mid-century homes, you know that it will be safe, cozy, and stylish.

Their first renovated home will be listed soon, and the dynamic duo will be looking for a new property to transform. For those looking for someone to buy their less than desirable mid-century home and update it, Hairpin Homes is the way to turn, even if the space being transformed is a hoarding house, a house permeated with the smell of cat pee, or a home with minor fire damage. Basically, Hairpin Homes will take properties that would have trouble selling on the MLS, then transform them into desirable, sought after properties.

How Cohere Community Helps Hairpin Homes

While Michelle thrives most at the construction site, Angel is happiest spending her work hours at Cohere soaking in the encouraging atmosphere. In addition, Angel and Michelle have made several important connections through the community that help them ensure that the homes that they remodel are high-quality, removing the hassle from the work of finding a safe and beautiful home.

The support of Cohere Community gives Hairpin Homes the opportunity to shine in ways that simply wouldn’t be possible without a robust community of interested professionals with many different areas of expertise.
