Joining a coworking space like Cohere Coworking is just the first step in your journey toward mind-blowing productivity. Engaging with the space and the community helps to ensure that you get the maximum possible benefit both professionally and personally. It can be challenging to know how to get the most out of a new environment, especially if you don’t know anyone yet. We thought a step-by-step guide on how to get the most value out of your membership would come in handy.

How to make the most out of your coworking membership in four simple steps:
Step 1: Get acquainted
We recommend visiting the space to work within the first week of getting your membership and attending one of our many events in the first month if you are able. In our experience, community members who visit the space to work within the first week of their membership are more likely to make it a consistent part of their schedule.
One of the best ways to get acquainted with the people at Cohere is to attend one of our many events. The variety of events that Cohere hosts not only provides community members with a way to get to know one another better, but many gatherings also provide ideas and opportunities to increase productivity and improve both mental and physical health.
Joining us on Slack is another great way to become more familiar with our community. There are channels for chatting about food, kids, pets, and music, channels for sharing wins and whimsy, channels filled with productivity tips and local recommendations, and even a channel dedicated solely to information and images from the South Pole, courtesy of Coherian Sheryl, who spends several months a year in Antarctica.
Step 2: Make the most of the space
Although the space itself isn’t the most important component of an effective coworking community, a well-thought-out environment can go a long way toward making it easier to work in. The building that Cohere is housed in has several features designed to make being productive as uncomplicated as possible.
The main space on the top floor is wide open and often bathed in natural light during the daytime. There are three small phone rooms in this work area, so members can have some privacy to take a call without either interrupting coworkers or having to leave the room to find a spot. There are also three cubbies off the hallway on the main floor, suitable for phone calls, online meetings, or whenever else you need a bit more seclusion than in the main work area.
We also have two conference rooms that can be reserved on the cobot member website. One is a large conference room in the basement area, suitable for presentations, meetings, hobby clubs, and lunchtime yoga, and the other is a smaller conference room, comfortable for up to four people. On warm days, members can often be found working, chatting, or lunching on our second-story balcony.
Step 3: Engage with the community
While becoming acquainted with the community and the space are great first steps, it’s when we engage with the community that we truly tap the potential of a friendship-based coworking community like Cohere’s. Don’t just watch the general notifications in Slack—share a picture of your gecko in the #pets channel, post your finished projects in the #todone channel, or vent about the inevitable technology-related trauma in #SHOUTABOUT.
As a natural byproduct of belonging to a friendship-based coworking community, Coherians sometimes gather to lunch together, take walking breaks, or simply converse in the lounge area. We strongly encourage this type of behavior. Not only do these interactions strengthen our community ties, but these types of connections are often the ones that provide the most support to help overcome both personal and professional conundrums, as well.
Other ways to productively engage with the community are to sign up for hour-long work sprints, longer productivity-related events like Cotivation or Ultracoworking, or themed events such as yoga or Crafternoon.
Step 4: Create helpful habits
Make working at Cohere a habit. Put it in your calendar and set that expectation with the people you share a home with. If you are the only person at home, you may still find it beneficial to state your intentions out loud. You can even book your workspace on our website ahead of time, saving yourself a step later. If you drive into Cohere, sign up for a parking pass on our website to avoid having to find an elusive parking spot in Old Town.
Coworking can help you overcome many of the common productivity barriers as well. It may be advantageous to plan your work schedule around events that you enjoy. If donuts give you the motivation to get out of bed, schedule your workday around donuts and discussion. If you love to craft, let the idea of Crafternoon motivate you through the morning. Schedule lunch with a Coherian or two to help get you through the afternoon slump.
